Rocío Márquez is the figurehead of the new generation of cante jondo in Spain, a traditional singing style of flamenco music that is both powerful and expressive. As a flamenco singer, she is deeply connected to her Andalusian roots, but as an artist, she does not let tradition hinder her and constantly pushes its limits. She will perform her new album, “Himno Vertical” which has recently been released. Accompanied only by the classical and electric guitars of Pedro Rojas, the proposal is situated in an undifferentiated space between flamenco, classical and experimental. The album combines different flamenco styles such as fandango, tango, verdiales, soleá, seguiriya, malagueña, bulerías and guajira. The lyrics have been written by Rocío herself, with the exception of three poems that she takes from William Shakespeare, Juan de la Encina and Friedrich Schiller. Momi Maiga stands out as a virtuoso of his instrument, the kora, as well as for his vocal fluency and as a curious composer with an amazing musical sensitivity. Momi descends from a family of Griots from Senegal, transmitters of the Kora. In his compositions, he blends ethnic jazz, flamenco, and hints of European classical music. He primarily sings in Mandinka and Wolof, addressing important themes of our time through music. In late 2022, Momi released his debut album, "Nio," which led him to perform in over 70 concerts with his quartet, including 30 internationally in cities across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland. In 2024, he released his second album, "Kairo", meaning "peace" in Mandinka, his mother tongue. Momi continues to collaborate with his talented team of musicians, including Catalan percussionist Aleix Tobias Sabater, cellist Marçal Ayats, and Mexican violinist Carlos Montfort. These musicians have shared the stage with renowned Spanish artists such as Marco Mezquida and Silvia Pérez Cruz, both also present during our festival.
